I hear you. NO pun intended. Having done a little work as a roadie and playing with audio gear I'm pretty careful with my hearing. But if you aren't doing much; ie a minute or 2 then it has to be quite loud for damage. Otherwise just grab some foam plugs.

Jeez, Hackaday seems to have gotten fairly PC and over safe in the year or 2 since I was there regularly. I mean, if you're going to have a turbine at 200k rpm explode surely safety glasses won't make that much difference.

Hi Sven,
In terms of setting up a transmission an option my be to get an electric generator on the shaft output, possibly using some kind of step down gearbox to get the speed in a range we like, then using electric motors to get the power to wheels.
That way you'd be able to use electronics rather than a multi speed gearbox.
Just an idea I've had and want to see done, as soon as I've cleared a few other projects off my list I'll have a crack at myself.

I like the idea and if I was in the same country I'd probably like to get involved physically, however I'd be interested in watching from the sidelines at this stage due to other commitments in my life currently.
Are you planning on sharing a lot of the development work publicly?

As someone who hasn't built anything in the field also I don't feel I can comment on the much that is being said.
However I have a moderate amount of experiance of the theory and practical applications of steam locomotives.
In steam locos most of the published information is on the full scale and my practical experience is limited to scale models, this is very similar to what I see here... There is a lot of info about larger engines that is published but that cannot be directly translated to a scale engine. You can't scale the engine out of an A380 down to 6 inches and get it to run with the same efficiency.
When I was starting in steam locos I felt similar to how I imagine you do but now that I have done some practical work I understand where you run into diminishing returns and where the costs to efficiency become higher than the costs. This sort of information can only come from understanding both the practical and theoretical side of things and the differences between the two.

What do you mean by "diamonds"? I imagine it's a term used to describe the way a supersonic exhaust appears.

If you're saying that 2-300 deg C would be a big improvement then I imagine for that you could probably get that from P2 bleed air.(Guessing with no practical experiance)
Might be something for me to look at once I get an engine together.

Hi John,
I like the idea of putting the water through like that, I guess though it would probably take some fine tuning to ensure there are no thermal shocks to the turbine and that the coverage was even enough
Perhaps for testing if there was some kind of coating that dis-colours easily could be applied to see if the water is being dispersed evenly enough.

Hi Syler, I'd be looking at a series hybrid style of system, similar to the link cursorkeys posted a few posts back. At this stage I'm thinking about getting my hands on an old APU and using that. The problem there being I don't want to spend more than a few hundred dollars at a time until I finish paying off my new car (Had to replace the one I wrote off) so I probably won't even be looking very hard for nearly 12 months at least. Unless someone happens to know where a cheap APU would be in Aus. Cheers, Rex

Hi, I'm finally ready to start spending some money to build a GT, so I've been starting to look through e-bay for turbochargers as something to start from. I came across this. When I calculated the postage to Bathurst it came out around $20 extra. Is this something I shouldn't touch or worth looking atconsidering the cost ~$40 seems to be fairly cheap. Cheers, Rex
