I feel bad joining this forum only to sell something, but I want to make sure my turbine finds a good new home. Here's the story:
My name is Trey German. I'm an engineer/pilot and I live in Houston TX. About 5-6 years ago I heard though a friend at work about a "jet engine" for sale. When I went to check it out, it turned out to be a literal barn find. The thing had been sitting in this gentleman's barn for many many years. The story was that he bought it surplus from the military and never did anything with it. Being a young engineer that was fascinated with anything and everything electromechanical, I bought the engine and took it home with the intent of getting it in running condition.
I got the engine home and started cleaning it up. The case was filled with decades of barn crud. Most of this was pecan shells...not sure if these were put in purposely as a desiccant or if a squirrel had gotten overzealous. I removed all the crap from the motor and started cleaning things up. This is when I discovered the shaft would not spin and the starter was open circuit. I pulled off the starter and tore it apart. I found that the windings had separated from the commutator and that the field windings were rubbing on the rotor. Inspection of the starter "clutch" showed that one of the pawls had broken off and was now inside the gearbox. I assumed the pawl had wedged itself between some of the teeth of the planetary gearbox preventing the shaft from turning.
Fast forward a few months... One night after a few beers I was showing some friends the engine and one of them reached down to touch the turbine wheel. The damn thing spun! I guess the pawl had dislodged itself and made it way down to the bottom of the case. After seeing how much work it was going to be to pull off the gearbox and get the pawl out, I eventually gave up on getting the engine running.
Fast forward to today... Due to same family issues, I'm planning on moving soon and I want to find the engine a new home. The engine has 22 hours on the hobbs and had an overhaul sticker on it from NAS Alameda. Modification plate reads (as best I can tell):
"G.T.P. 27.41.44R
47 RA.71.78.79.80
842.9A1.11"
I believe the internals of the engine to be in good shape, but I'm no turbine mechanic. The engine is partially disassembled for cleaning and will be sold as-is. I have nice printouts of the "Operation and Service Instruction" as well as "Illustrated Parts Breakdown" manuals I will include with the engine. I want to give y'all a first stab at it before I list it on ebay. I'd like to have it gone sometime in April. Local pickup (77006) is preferred, but I can drop it on a pallet if need be (buyer arranges and pays shipping). Feel free to ask questions and PM me any offers.
Thanks,
Trey
FYI these pictures are from when I was working on it originally. I will post more of the current state of the engine shortly.
