Hi Guys Decided to start a build thread for the new karting gearbox now that the gears have arrived The main gear is kinda weighty at ~2.5 kgs being 25 mm thick , but it should act as a bit of a "flywheel" to reduce chain snatch affecting the pinion . And a couple of pics of the casing wooden patterns , still lotsa work to do on them , but this isn't a rush job , so plenty of time to finish them and get some castings done . The pinion is 11 tooth Module 2.5 and the gear is 48 tooth for a 4.363636...:1 ratio, nice strong chunky gears, LOL.....not concerned about quiet running qualities :-) I want the gearbox capable of being bolted down onto a standard karting engine mount Cheers John

I can organise CNC machining of wood patterns or aluminium if it helps You can send me some rough drawings and I'll put it in CAD

Hi Andrew
No , no CNC'ing thank you , this has got to be a "backyard" job that can be easily replicated by anyone , I want it a bit "crude" and simple.
But heh , if someone wants to do a CNC model I'd be happy to supply some specs of bits I used , once I know it works :-)
Cheers John

These days I think it's easier to get stuff CNC machined than to get parts cast

These days I think it's easier to get stuff CNC machined than to get parts cast For simple parts, I tend to agree. Especially if it needs secondary machining anyway. On the other hand, 3D printing has made pattern making so trivial, that casting can win when the parts are complex, or require complicated cores or undercuts.
I love my 3D printer!

Hi Guys A few pics of the current freepower/transmission , its all bolted together and nearly ready to use , just need to source a cone to cover the NGV bore . Its turned out an "ugly child", I'm finding it hard to love it :-( Hopefully the new home made gearbox will be more appealing Cheers John

Wonderful setup! Why you need to build another one?

As long as it will do the job. Cheers, Mark.

Yeh it should do the job , but its too bulky , too heavy , too complicated and just doesn't "look right" ...............I can do better ......I think :-)

Plus, with that gearbox you can fit a forward facing shaft for a turboprop application!

Payback for the TPE331 ideas that are stuck in my head.

John,
I don't think it's ugly...just adapted, and you obviously desire purpose built. Only the designer knows the warts...
What is your pinion rpm?
