Sounds like a silly question but i was thinking. Surely butane and propane are just as volatile and we run our engines on them.

Yep , we can run on petrol , but its a lot more dangerous than kero which doesn't give off combustable fumes until the temperature is pretty warm .
Kero has the right combustion characteristics and smells "right"
I run my 12/118 engine on 2 parts petrol with 1 part kero , but we need to be a lot more safety conscious than when using kero or diesel

Interesting. Thanks John. I was thinking to myself about a petrol/diesel blend so its easier to start up from cold

Yep , a mix of diesel and 10-15% petrol makes a "better" fuel than straight diesel which can be a bit "smoky" at low power settings.
