You'd be using up the majority of the exhaust velocity and converting it into mechanical energy via the freepower, the exit velocity would be too low to produce any meaningful thrust even with an afterburner I'd assume.

The pressure in the exhaust pipe would be so low that the afterburner efficiency would be terrible - terrible efficiency means almost no thrust.

I'll have a look for more pics of the build but it was a long time ago , the kart was purchased 20th August 2004 , first spoolup 20 March 2005 , 7 months to the day from beginning to end .
It is possible to have both freepower shaft horsepower and an afterburner , its simply a case of dividing up the available pressure exiting the gas producer , there'll be less SHP developed than if there was no A/B , and similarly less thrust from the A/B because of the freepower pressure drop .
The gas producer won't know any different as all it sees is a restriction downstream and doesn't care whether its a freepower or A/B or combo , as long as the overall restriction stays the same and puts the same backpressure on the gas producer its running parameters stay consistent .
I did a set of "numbers" for Andy M's 10/110 engine and was rather surprised by the results, the afterburner thrust drop wasn't all that great due to the peculiarities of the maths involved , similarly with the SHP , the 2 stages of expansion , freepower plus afterburner , meant each was at a lower rate but "efficiency" was improved , it ended up with ~75 SHP and 200 lbs of A/B thrust .
So yes , we can have the best of both worlds, shaft power for good acceleration and some "flame and thunder" from an A/B :-)
Cheers John

Had a good look through my records , not much on the build , I don't think I had a digital camera at the time I made the shaft tunnel , they were only just becoming readily available around here back then :-( Added a new video though youtu.be/7-NNhxVnB6w
