Got the welded gearbox back yesterday and looks good. It had a paint/sealant inside that was a bugga to move even with the sand blaster. After it was done I though I had better reseal it in case there was some porosity in the welds. Looked up on the PPG website and found what I thought was perfect Epoxy S1193 Listed a GE product for sealing the inside of Gas Turbine Gearboxes..... Perfect. Then looked at the price... 3 months lead time and $195 per gallon minimum 4 gallons..... Naaaahhh ....just got some plain old Red Glyptol 1201 still $52 for 500mls, but should do the job.

Nice work! Welding old cast aluminum isnĀ“t always very easy, oil in the pores and strange alloys makes life interesting for a welder...

Your welder has done a good job of that,
i have both an inverter and transformer tig, found the transformer makes a much better job of crappy materials

Hi Ian
Looks like a "bought one"
Yeh , nice welding , that could have gone terribly wrong , the guy you got to do the job certainly knew his trade .
I bet its a relief to have it done :-)
On to the next part
Cheers John

The saga episode 9 Just put all the parts together to trial fit things. This is the what the final layout will look like. The manufactured bearing & seal holder attached to the gearbox one side and the torque tube uni joint bell the other. Factory engine mounts on the lower part of the gearbox and standard mount to the gas generator on the left. The mating surfaces needed a little bit dressing with a die grinder at the welds but otherwise fine. There is no gasket here just come type of sealant on the faces, will probably just use a plain black silicon here. Rear view from the quick change to the torque tube, uni joint bell and then the gearbox. All seems to fit fine.

LOL.... Beer can be a handy bribe at times Still working on the gearbox, have given it all a coat of paint to make it look nice & I will be cleaning and painting the outside of the gas generator while I wait for the splining to be finished. Had a bit of a "Oh Bugger" moment when I dropped the parts to be splined. I forgot that the when doing internal splining they need an undercut to clear the chips as the spline is cut, this would be at a really inconvenient place.... I think we have it sorted though with some clever machining of a hemisphere rather than a square undercut. More later Cheers Ian...........

Not much to report at the moment the gear and shaft are still waiting for some tooling to comple the undercut. In the meantime I have been stripping down the gas generator to clean, paint & fix a few oil leaks. and painted the ancillaries. and have 3 tables of with 136 different parts and 70 photographs. Just finishing the painting today and hope I can get all the parts back where they came from
