Tonight I´ve started cutting out templates for frame strengthening plates in 3mm steel, the steering head will need three of them to aid the welds so I won´t drop the forks at speed... The rear axle mount also got a pair of plates. I started triangulating the rear of the frame when my littlest girl yelled on the Babywatch and I had to call it a night. That radio is worth its weight in gold for sure, countless late hours in the workshop that couldn´t have been done without it. Cheers! /Anders

Tonight I finished making the templates for the 3mm sheet metal gussets (learned that word from a landracing guy who emailed me about how I should place them) so this week I will cut them out at work. I added a pair of CrMo tubes just below where the seat will be to lighten the load on the weld where the single upper frame tube ends. At his point I removed the engine to see if any of the tubes would be in the way, they weren´t so I continued by removing the oil and kero tanks and air intake so I could add a couple of strengthening tubes between the lower frame tubes. Here you can see them a bit clearer. The biggest progress tonight is probably that I think I have figured out how to make the seat and the rear fairing for the bike, I won´t tell you in case I change my mind but if it works it should look pretty good. Cheers! /Anders

Last night I spent three hours welding the gussets to the frame, I also removed the two thin bars between the lower frame tubes and replaced them with 1 1/2" CrMo tubes just like the rest of the frame for extra strenght. Cheers! /Anders

Do you TIG because of personal preference or is it just the right technique for the job(s)?

When it comes to welding, I have found the found the following to be 100% true
TIG - Hyper-extreme precision regarding heat, penetration, filler deposition - Typically the most elegant and operator intensive approach
MIG - Throw lots of metal and heat at it to make it never come apart ever again - The biggest hammer in the shed approach
Stick - Like MIG but now with your hand 20cm or so away from the weld, you look like a conductor for the world's brightest orchestra
Oxy-Fuel - Like TIG but old school - Now you get to hang with the gray beards
Direct Short Spot Welding - This is why they say to never short out a car battery
Capacitive Discharge Spot Welding - Like sex, once you get her held down the process is relatively quick and then you need to recharge
I have more but they are for welding processes we probably won't ever see someone on this board use...

basically, if you can't TIG it, it's not worth welding

basically, if you can't TIG it, it's not worth welding Heh, I came into welding as an electronics engineer and I love TIG as it feels very similar to soldering. I'm juuuust getting to the stage where I can reliably get the roll-of-pennies look and good penetration at the same time. Stick welding just scares me, so much splatter!

LOL.........as the owner of a grey beard , I love oxy welding sheet steel , no sticking electrodes or ulta violet radiation , just heat and watch the metal flow together , theres something very primal about using flames to do a job :-)
Cheers John
