Hi John I understand that my current DIY gas turbine is undersized for the 3rd stage Allison turbine wheel. I am a little confused by the use of only half the annulus of the turbine. Do you mean like a "half moon" design for NGV? Do you have any dimensions/data of the 3rd turbine wheel? I have now started to read a book; ”Gas Turbine Theory" 4th edition by H Cohen. Very good reading Cheers Erik

The Cohen book is very informative, you´ll have some serious reading to do to get your head around it. =) Still no news on the angle drive for the turbine bike... Cheers! /Anders

Hooray! The gearbox company called today to tell me that the angle drive has arrived to Sweden, it will be sent to me immediately so I should have it by the end of the week!

Indeed, I would be even luckier if they forgot to bill me for it...

Hi Erik
Cohen is the man , my 3rd Impression circa 1958( by photo lithography) of their 1951 First Edition written by Cohen and Rogers, is still my most valuable text , its what finally got me to understand how these beasts work .
Yes , a half moon (crescent) shaped nozzle arrangement , otherwise you'd need to have multiple blanked off segments with a normal type of NGV arrangement .
The 3rd stage wheel should have a "number" etched onto the disc , this is the flow area in square inches and it should be ~"10 "
The wheels have a max rpm of 32,000 , and an inlet temperature of <800 deg C .
You'll need to develop your engine as a pure jet first , then once you have good data from it you can design the freepower nozzle bits .
Cheers John

Hi Steve
We certainly can't have enough good reference books , I've found the early Editions a simpler read as they don't assume you have an Engineering Degree and can understand the more complicated mathematics , well complicated for someone who hadn't been in school for >4 decades ;-)
Hows your engine development going ??
Where in Sydney did you live before moving to the US ??
Cheers John

The family is now in Greenwich, although we've moved about a bit, we started in Cronulla when I was a kid in the 1960's, then to Canberra, then Dubbo NSW before moving back to Greenwich in 2001. I plan to move back there when I retire.
I've made some progress, I'll update the thread shortly.
Regards.
Steve.

Hi Steve
Greenwich is nice , close enough to the city but still has a pleasant vibe ..........I was in the Blue Mountains until I recently moved back up the North Coast to Laurieton , ..............LOL, where all the retirees go ..............60% of the population is over 60 years old .................busily spending their kids inheritances ;-) .
Cheers John

John beat me with a hair width and got his shed a day before my angle drive arrived, the final puzzle piece is here at last! The gear box is very solid with sturdy shafts and everything, I was told that the primary gear was removable from the shaft which it turned out was not so I will have to figure out a way to use the standard shaft as it is. A very nice set of gears, hope they can cope with revs 10 times what they are designed for... Cheers guys, I am celebrating with a couple of cold ones as we speak! /Anders

Hi Anders
LOL............a very thin hair ;-)
Been busy this morning acid etching the concrete floor in preparation for painting ................ its nice to have a big empty shed just waiting to be filled with turbine stuff .
Solid looking gearbox ,...........what are the shaft and gear dimensions ??
Yep , you'll be needing some oil jet lube for the gear mesh .
Cheers John
