Hi Smithy What , only 100 litres .............heh heh , that won't take long to burn ;-) Weather is looking good , it should be fun Cheers John LOL...maybe I should fill up the drums again on the Saturday evening after the first day.. You're right though...she's a big thirsty girl....silly afterburner....what was I thinking?? A Rolls-Royce C20B engine driven fuel pump capable of well over 1600lb-hr @ 1000psi, but only running ~1/2 the normal rpm for the gas producer which is sucking ~270lb-hr @ ~550psi at full noise, ( still lots of by-pass happening there), two Bosch 044 pumps in parallel just for the A/B, your original EFI engine pump supplying the hot-streak system....no wonder she's a tad thirsty... At least she's out there getting used and putting smiles on the punters' faces...I quite enjoy it too. Cheers, Smithy.

Hi Smithy
You've been a great ambassador for DIY turbines , there must be thousands of kids out there dreaming of doing something similar after watching your exhibitions , heh heh , and pestering their unfortunate fathers to help them .
You'd have to of burnt more fuel than any of us ..........LOL, probably >10 times my total burn, keep up the good work :-)
Cheers John

Hi All, Last weekend was pretty good, burnt heaps of fuel...approx 70Liters...! No issues with the "Beast" either, started easily and ran exceptionally well....lots of happy onlookers, even had a couple of cheers and applause etc...along with one or two of the normal whingers/whiners who were not happy with the noise and smoke..."It's a car show people, it's supposed to be loud, if you don't like it...don't watch"...! If it was a normal single cylinder garden variety go-kart....people would just walk straight past without so much as a second look. Am doing a "3 day" event this coming weekend, Fri-Sat-Sun....The V8 Supercars at Homebush. It's a big car racing event here in Sydney, Australia...Hopefully I can put on a reasonable show for the punters..! A couple of the professional drivers are known to be interested in turbine engines, (brothers Rick & Todd Kelly), I wonder if I can at least have a bit of a talk with them if they happen to wander by.?? Hopefully the "Florescent Vest" wearing OH&S morons won't give me too much grief....we'll soon find out I suspect... Cheers, Smithy.

Hi Smithy
Good to know your weekend was as successful and trouble free as always , keep those punters happy , hopefully it might result in a few more Members here , and maybe a build or two :-)
There'll be good exposure next weekend , weather seems to be favourable , don't let the OH&S guys give you too much trouble .
I'll be looking forward to hearing how it went :-)
Cheers John

Will certainly let you know how things go....Will be keeping the P2 down to "reasonable levels", don't want to hurt the old girl now do we!!? Oil pressure is still good which lets me know the bearings are still in good nick. Haven't had a chance to fit new brake M-cyls, calipers/discs as yet....still trying to find some that will fit. Might keep the original rear caliper, just a good clean-up and maybe a paint. And I'm still trying to source a decent body for it too...no having much luck in either department.. Cheers, Smithy.

Hi All, Had a really good weekend at the V8 Supercars race meeting over the weekend here in Sydney. The OH&S people were nowhere to be seen . The "Beast" got a real good workout, did at least a dozen static engine runs over the weekend, not one issue with the engine, it ran flawlessly, quick easy starts, good temps, good pressures, even in the ~40C ambient temps on Friday she was OK, P2 was down a bit in the hot air at the same fuel pressure but she still performed as well as could be expected!! Had crowds of nearly 1000 people during most runs...! Also had Rick Kelly from one of the race teams come to visit me, he's really interested in all things turbine related, he took one of my cards and said he'll be in contact soon...We'll see what comes of it. The little 1/4 scale jet dragster also got a good workout....everything just worked on the weekend, didn't have to fix/repair or fettle anything, that's a rarity in itself, the only "maintenance I did was to check the oil level.! Even got my ugly head on the TV for a couple of minutes for an interview and engine run. John, you even got a nice mention too as a dear friend & "Father and designer of the Beast"..! All in all, a great but extremely tiring weekend, one of the best shows I've done...had to take Monday off work to unpack things and recover... Cheers, Smithy.

Hi Smithy
LOL.....I was thinking of you out in that heat on the weekend as I watched some of the racing on TV whilst sitting in the aircon here at home.
Good news about the OH&S guys not causing any grief , great crowds , good exposure for our hobby :-)
Nice to know everything was working as intended .
One thing I've been meaning to ask you , have you thought of setting up an electric ducted fan for starting the engine rather than having to fire up the two stroke blower , some of those bigger EDFs process a lot of air and are running several Kw of power .
Congrats again for a successful "flying of the DIY GT flag" :-)
Cheers John

John, that ducted fan idea is one I've never even thought of...I'll have a look into it....as you say, there are ones around with plenty of power available....just a matter of hooking one up I guess....air is easy to come by. Cheers, Smithy.

They might not make enough pressure compared to the centrifugal blower - but you could possibly put a couple in series..
Another option would be to make a nice blower with a brushless motor and even an onboard battery.

Yeah...you're probably right, as you're aware, I don't have a lot of room between the engine inlet housing and the seat so whatever I do will need to be compact...a bit of thought needs to go into this I think as it will need the best part of 4hp (~3kw) to do it's thing...until then.....the good old reliable blower will suffice. Once I initiate the start I can have her up to idle in ~10-12 seconds...not too bad really. Cheers, Smithy.

Hi Smithy LOL..............you've got her that well tuned she's like starting an IC engine :-) Cheers John LOL...Thanks John...I must admit, she is really honking atm ...is even better than when we were up at the kart track a few months back....I just keep making tiny little adjustments here and there which make a difference to the way things work together...I guess most would call it R&D....I call it.."Fiddling". I have another event at Newcastle kart track this coming Sunday....would be great if you could pop down for the day....I know you don't travel well but would be great to see you again, if we could convince Andrew to come along too we could make a "JATO" DIY day of it...hint...hint.. Cheers, Smithy.

Hi Smithy
LOL.......I wish I could ........Only just getting back in my shed today after a 10 day forced break due to some health issues that have flared up , I want to get the 12/118 back together before too much crap finds it way inside from just sitting there , it only needed a couple of hours work to finish off what I was doing ............bummer ...........hopefully I'll get things finished today/tomorrow and the outer can at least slipped on before everything has to be put on hold until after Christmas...............too much happening , gotta get better before the grandkids arrive .
Cheers John
