Hi Ron
Yeh , theres generally some low tech way of getting info , I do a lot of my "thinking" of how, whilst vegetating in front of the TV or sitting in the tub at night .
I tried turning the turb wheel into various positions and they all gave similar results , so it looks like the "scroll"is doing its job .
Though I was a little surprised to see the tip area results were nice and strong , which sorta blew my theory about the gases not being "grabbed" because of a lack of a "hook" at the tip , but maybe things would change when the fluid is travelling at 1,000 ft/sec rather than 100 ft/sec ..........time will tell , but for now I'm happy , the cotton's trajectory was following the blades outlet angle nicely , ~20 degrees at tip and 40+ degrees at root with intermediate ones between those angles .
The 3" wastegate butterfly valve should arrive today so I'll have a new toy to play with , I'll just lightly tack weld it to the dump tube at this stage , but if the next "live test" goes off OK I'll fix it more securely , hopefully I won't need to go up to a 4" wastegate , the 3 incher gives me ~6.5 sq ins which is around a third of the 5" jetpipes flow area , one would think that should be enough .
Cheers John

It's not impossible to make a clutch, and well within your tooling/ability. Garage54 on YouTube successfully ghetto-fabbed (and I mean really ghetto) one out of a brake drum and shoes for a Lada recently. youtu.be/o6AF3LiMItsGiven some dimensions to work to, it's something I wouldn't mind having a go at myself and shopping over to you! If you look at lock up clutches for bikes they are quite basic in design and bulletproof they get pushed to like 600hp

Yeh , Mark has been doing it a long time , his 3 litre engine markwalkermotorcycles.com/motorcycles/big-ned/creating-big-ned/ really fascinated me with its rotary valve heads and "floating" cylinders , Mark came into my life at about the time he was building it , LOL....we had "discussion" about lubrication, or lack there of :-) After that build he went into more "artistic" creations rather than practical ones , his V16 markwalkermotorcycles.com/motorcycles/1916-the-v16/creating-1916-the-v16/ using Victa lawn mower bits was a strange one . He now lives a few hours drive away so I haven't seen his latest builds ................ if only I could have got him interested in turbines . Cheers John

Hi Guys A few pics of the "wastegate" . I removed the vacuum activator and fixed the butterfly valve in place using a bit of threaded rod , once I know things are working OK I'll go to the trouble of fitting a cable/spring to operate it . The various sellers of these on Ebay give very vague information about their operation , but vacuum seems to operate them whether normally closed or normally opened, I didn't go the electricaly operated ones as theres too much heat from the scroll which would probably cause it to fail. For what they cost, they're good value when one considers how much work would be needed to make a DIY one , the butterfly seats against machined surfaces and the shafting etc should produce a reasonably good seal . Cheers John

Yep , a very talented guy ...............who also makes great coffee :-)
Considering the little shed he works out of, I can only call him a craftsman .............I'm in awe watching him work , knowing I can never match his abilities ............but can be inspired :-)

John,
You are at least as talented... in a different way of course, but far more inspiring.
From the turbine bike in the 90's on up to this Fat Boy thread, you have inspired countless others into this path of science&technology. Inspiring others through decades of amazing, hand crafted turbine engines complete with pictures, descriptions, equations, testing, video and analysis for everyone to see and learn from. Across multiple forums.
You're the catalyst here. Without your inspiration this forum may not even exist.

LOL.....now you're embarrassing me , I'm just a retired old fart with time on his hands who likes tinkering in his shed, its my privilege to help others achieve the same "enjoyment??" as I have from this hobby .
I'm a great believer that we only get out of life what we put into it , everything goes round and around , what we give away comes back to us .............bugger me , I'm sounding like a "Spiritialist Preacher" ...........nah , just a realist of how life works ................its a shame it often takes us decades to realise it ...............but better late than never ;-)
Cheers John

Would be nice to make you some coffee some day, or vice versa! With the cold weather setting in(no more flying or working on the house), should be back on my project soon. Preach on brother!!
