John, truly amazing sheet metal work. Do you use gas welding for all your welds?
Thanks, Ron

Hi Mark
Yep , with a 9 inch dia freepower wheel things get rather large and unfortunately heavy :-(

Hi Guys Scroll finished, ..............why is it that some welds go nicely and others are fair mongrels to do with blown holes everywhere ...........ah well , it'll do for a test piece . A few pics with the 2 foot torque arm attached and wheel mounted up. Time to get some steel and modify the test stand to mount it on , thankfully the jetpipe slipjoint is still "slipping" even if a bit tight from some warpage , the first heat cycle should relax things a bit , the turb wheel still spins thankfully :-) Cheers John

Hi Andy
LOL, thats why I went to a 2 foot arm to "halve" the foot pounds of torque , the 25 kg spring balance should do the job, only ~20 kgs in my wildest dreams ;-)
I'll have a "safety chain" as well as the spring balance just in case .
Yep, its not looking too bad as long as the welds aren't examined too closely , just hope it doesn't put too much backpressure on the gas producer , I guess it'll be fairly obvious as soon as she fires up and those interstage temps go off the scale.
Spent the afternoon cleaning up the workshop , lotsa cardboard scraps everywhere , tools all over the place , but it had to be done before starting the next phase .
Cheers John

John, good laugh about your shop cleaning and straightening. When I was a kid I always wondered why the mechanic's shop was so cluttered. Now I know. The choice is between accomplishing something or having a clean organized shop. When it gets so bad I get embarrassed and then I start cleaning and straightening.
Thanks, Ron

that looks excellent Stainless can certainly be a bit of a pain to weld. It helps to back purge it all with argon, but it's tricky on a part like that and uses a lot of gas. Will you pipe fresh air into the gap on the other side of the "screw" panel to help cool the bearing tunnel?

Hi Andrew
I'll make up a thermal shield using some ceramic blanket to keep the shaft tunnel and gearbox safe from radiant heat , and theres some bleed air being fed into the gap between wheel and scroll flange/shaft tunnel to help keep temps down there.
Hopefully all will be OK when its finished :-)
Cheers John

Hi Guys Got the freepower stage "mounted" up behind the gas producer ............she's getting to be a big lump of a beasty :-) LOL.......A bit of angle iron here and there to replace my wooden bits and it'll be done......easy . Cheers John

John, what is your planned test program. Stall torque? Stage matching?
Thanks, Ron

Hi Ron
It'll be a pretty short test program , just fire her up and try to get to full throttle without the temps getting too high , if I can keep the temps similar to what I had with the jet nozzle fitted I'll be more than satisfied.
The stalled torque readings will give a good indication of potential horsepower output and as long as it indicates >200 HP , my job is finished , not before time as my health is suffering from the extended build time , .......gotta lower my stress levels :-(
Cheers John

John, please lower your stress levels. Health is the only thing that matters.
