Hi Duncan, I am not a metallurgist but that to me looks like heat damage most likely a hot streak but it would be interesting to see the combustor can and check for cracks etc there.
If the nozzle vanes are not repairable and a replacement is not available an option may be to cut out the damaged vanes and run it like that. The engine will be down on power a little but should be safe.
I believe Art Arfons did this to the compressor blades when parts were not available for his J79 Green Monster and went on to take the land speed record.
Cheers Ian...

If you have a J44 with a one piece cast turbine wheel, be very careful, they're expendable missile motors. I wouldn't want to be near one while it's running. Observe the 45 degree rule.

October, 2019
Greetings all, hope to find everyone well. And now, the big announcement long overdue, the J44 is alive & running once again! After a 3+ (4?) year restoration, it is back together, looking good & running! I had found a 'parts engine' (a J44-R-20), with apparently few hours on it, to donate the hot parts I needed for my J44-R-24. I used the turbine rotor, turbine stator & the combustor from the parts engine, with pretty much everything else the original parts to restore this little turbojet. Thanks to Agent JayZ of Jet City Turbines for the balancing of the rotating assembly & thanks to Mark of BoMar Industries for the fabrication of miscellaneous 'special tools' & parts.
I have posted 2 'newer' videos on my You Tube channel, "Darren Duncan", of the first runs since restoration. There is more work to do yet, including a few modifications to the electrical system & a larger fuel boost pump on the stand that can deliver the proper amount of fuel to run much above 50% RPM.
Thanks to all that have followed this project & I will hopefully have more to post in the future, as I progress.
Cheers,
Darren Duncan
PS: Please see my posts in the "DIY Turbine Engine Discussion and Builds"/"The J44 Project" section here on JATO! There are pix & videos!
PSS: June, 2020, here are a few photos of the project, showing some of the progress, up through last year, when we got her running again!

Here are my 3 (so far) videos of the J44 running, post-restoration! Please check out my You Tube channel, "Darren Duncan"! All of this project is documented, from the beginning until the "Runs 8 & 9: Testing a New, Modified Igniter" latest video.

Thats a nasty looking "bulge" on that NGV :-( Hey there, sorry for the delay in replying; I just noticed it tonight! I ended-up replacing the rotor & nozzle via a parts engine. Check out the pix & see how nice the cleaned-up with glass bead blasting! Thanks for following... more to come as I address the electrical system & eventually, the fuel boost pump!

Thanks Ian, I was fortunate to find a 'parts engine' that had good hot parts! The turbine wheel, nozzle & combustor looked to be hardly used! A glass bead blasting made them look like new!
