I've looked at it for my automotive application but only 80% efficiency I'm afraid. They also need forced cooling for big HP and need relatively low input speeds. Cheers, Ian

Hi Ian, thanks for your reply. They look like a nice transmission though.
Cheers, Mark.

Hi Ian, thanks for your reply. They look like a nice transmission though. Cheers, Mark. Mark, I looked at just about every power transmission possibility in depth for the SpridJET project. Air, hydraulic, electric and mechanical. All but mechanical fall down, for my purposes i.e. Landspeed racing, due to efficiency and / or cost. Air and hydraulic need big reductions from the free power turbine output speeds and then you have to use a pump/compressor to move the fluid/gas and then a motor to convert back to power. With 80% efficiencies at each end plus some pumping losses you probably only get around 60% efficiency plus cooling problems. Electric would have been good but with two rare-earth magnet wheel motors plus a generator plus some sort of battery storage plus a custom controller was north of £25k. There are off-the-shelf solutions but they are HEAVY and not suitable for a 500kg weight limit LSR car. So I ended up with mechanical. I'm building a 7:1 reduction gearbox to hang off the end of the turbine and then a belt drive to differential. Here's one I was involved with earlier Cheers, Ian

Wow! I vote for a build thread Ian.

Hi Ian, Sounds like you are the man when it comes to transmissions. Yes like Anders said build thread please.
Cheers, Mark.
