Madpatty, what is the reason or logic that requires a separate ESC unit especially one as sophisticated as the VESC? Can this function not be incorporated into the ECU? Thanks, Ron Hi Ron. A couple hours of points worth sharing here- 1. VESC is not specifically required for our engines. It has more functionality that we wonāt require for normally running the engine. The only reason I was considering VESC was it being Open-source and has some good features. But right now for all my engine testing I have used a basic brushless controller ($50 ish) thatās taking input from my ECU and running the bldc starter motor. Now to your question why canāt it be incorporated in the ECU. It sure can be incorporated into the ECu and thatās what all companies like Jetcat, AMT, Kingtech do. They all have built in power electronics that power the starter motors and fuel pumps directly. But thatās where the problem is for people like us. The power electronics section is really specific to the power requirements of the particular starter motor and fuel pump someone is going to use. When I started this project, I contacted Xicoy electronics, the company that makes aftermarket FADECs for RC Jet engines. They refused to change anything from the standard ECU they have. Now my ECU is not limited to any standard engine. Itās a more universal design and also really helpful for hobbyists like us. The user gets to choose their own starter motor and fuel pump(brushless or brushed) based on their particular engine size requirements. The controller is also specific to that power requirement and they can control it all using 1 single standard ECU. I have successfully tested my ECU on a 22kg RC engine and AMT Titan 40 kg thrust engine (each one with their specific starter and fuel pumps). All I had to do was get a bigger more powerful ESCs for the AMT engineās starter and fuel pump. The starter power requirements on some of the larger engines ( likes of the ones built by racket and Anders here) goes upward of 1-1.5kW which cannot be powered by any off the shelf xicoy ECU today. In short- My ECU gives the hobbyists the freedom to choose their own power components. They can also keep on experimenting with different starters and fuel pump and not have to change the ECU everytime. Hope this makes sense. Regards. Patty

Hi Monty. I have been going back and forth on integrating the VESC on a single chip. Reasons being- 1. Chip size gets too big 2. Power components are more prone to failures 3. Not everyone wants same power draw etc. 4. Cost
What I have been thinking is getting a separate power chip (VESC or ESC) and mount it on top of my ECU board using standoffs. I have been talking to ESC suppliers and some are willing to āadaptā their ESCs to accept the slight design changes. I cannot beat the commercial availability and cost of the ESc or VESc with my smaller volumes.
If you interested to follow this route then maybe we can do this together. I can adapt my ECU boards to accept whatever ESC or VESC you decide to choose. I can then incorporate the interconnection design connectors etc.
On a brighter side- I have added many new functionalities to my existing ECU- I have added-
1. Full Kerosene start 2. Support for 2x Solenoid valves (drivers inbuilt) to accept fuel or gas solenoids 3. Pressure transducer connections (ECU can take usual 0-5v pressure sensor input) 4. Thrust sensor(Load Cell) amplifier built in ECU. Just connect any 4 wire load cell to measure thrust. 5. Built in driver for kero-start plug or glow plug.
I am receiving some new PCBs next week of you are willing to try.

Hi Monty. I understand the use of standard throttle Hall effect signal.
The ECU is running at 5v. You can power it off of the standard ESCās BEC power supply directly or a separate 5v supply. I have tried both.

Hi Guys. This is whatās included and will be shipped. A properly sealed well built ECU enclosure with waterproof automotive connector and wiring harness. 3-pin and 2-pin watertight automotive male connectors. I will also toss in the female connectors that you can then solder on to your engineās input/outputs. All ECUs will be tested before shipping. Regards. Patty

Patty that looks fantastic!!...My starter uses a VESC controller. It is a starter generator. Basically the firmware is configured to transition to regen braking mode after the start signal is turned off, and it goes into current and voltage control mode. I was planning to use the rpm signal from the VESC as a tach for the engine ecu. Not sure if that will work with your controller or not. The rpm is on the fan side, so it's not the same as the core, but it just needs to be multiplied by the gear ratio. Either way, I could put an rpm sensor on the core if it can't. Do you have a wired method of obtaining data? Like canbus or serial port? Are the outputs standard PWM signals? Hi Monty. When I started working on this I realised people would want to use their own power stages especially for starter motors etc. BUT I am working on a version that will incorporate a VESC power stage into the ECU itself. But to answer your question, yes this ECU can work with any ESC or VESC as long it takes a standard RC PWM input pulse for throttle (which I guess all ESCs and VESCs take) For the RPM it has the ability to take a āsingle pulseā or a ādual pulseā digital signal as RPM input. It has a built in amplifier for signal conditioning as well if someone wants to use their rpm sensor. Otherwise I can add a RPM sensor as well to the purchase that works flawlessly with this ECU. Yes they are all standard RC PWM signals. Right now there is no wired method of data transfer. Thanks

All the settings on Page 1 and page 2 are editable.
Page 5 allows user to run the engine on Autostart, Fuel control or starter control mode. Pump prime is another option.

whats your thoughts on this compressor wheel? The rotation is opposite(anti-clockwise) Finding a suitable turbine will be difficult, maybe, because options are already limited. Regards.
