I really don´t understand how the extremely safety oriented dragrace arrangers dare to have these vehicles on their events, they are great crowd pleasers of course but it feels like there are lots of things that can go wrong. (not putting any judgement or so on Ernie or Chris cars, just a general observation. If I were to choose only jet vehicles should be allowed to race)

Looks like he had a fuel leak before he even staged. The car did not accelerate at all, he should have aborted the pass. Notice the engine was still running after he stopped, appears he failed to shut the engine off. Suprised it stopped.
These cars have big fuel pumps so any leak is a major problem, ecpecally in a enclosed body. He damn sure had a good fire suit and equipment. They DO NOT accept abuse. I did not see any hot start problems.
video 2:
We REQUIRE that the track officals keep the crowd away from the exhaust area... PERIOD!.. Our fire shows are done in the bleach box with only "Hot pops" done during staging.
Bob Motz has a J-79 in his truck, and it is awsome. There are some tracks that do not have a safe staging area or the stands are to close. In this video, in my opinion, the track officals should have asked or roped off a 45 degee area from the staging line.
Now take into mind a NITRO CAR making the same run... Fires, explosions, spectors have been killed a 1/4 away from the car. Somewhere safety has to be the spectors fault. It you desire to look down the tail pipe of a J-79 or J-34 for excitement, you are a "DUMB ASS"!
I have driven a Nito Funny car for 10 years... blown up, on fire, hit walls, no brakes, hit sand trap, parachute not coming out...etc.
Now I drive a Vacumn cleaner ..hmmmmm sounds safer, but ask Chris, I DEMAND safety at every turn! NO SHORT CUTS! Spector safety is paramont. Kill yourself but do not hurt a spectator.
Back to your question..... Some people will stand behind a 747 for the fill of absoulte power or go to the end of a runnway for the thrill of possible being killed.

Ernie is pretty strict about safety, he's a real pain in the ass but I must admit I haven't been back to the burn unit since I started listening to him.
Ernie has been blown up, on fire, hit walls, no brakes, hit sand trap, parachute not coming out...etc, and that was just the qualifying pass!

Chris... I was told to close my eyes when the lite went green, stab the throttle ,close my eyes and count to 5. It worked most of the time . I still have most of my fingers and one real nice 3rd degree face peal. Strange that my daughter is charge nurse in a burn ward @ Doctors Hospital. Do you think she wants me as a geany pig? ernie
