Don't forget to check out Paul's stuff ("Pauls_Got_Parts") on Ebay. Maybe message him via Ebay and see what he has.

Hi Darren, I got ahold of Paul he does have a mostly complete engine, missing the exciter, and the starter is an air start. I was hoping for a 28v I cannot find any part numbers or manufacturer's names in the service manual for the starter or exciter. Jason

The exciter is not a bid deal as you can find them almost all the time on ebay & salvage yards' listings. Just be sure to get one that is 24-28 VDC input, not a 115 VAC (400 Hz) type. You want a single output type unless your engine has 2 igniter plugs, or you can use 2 single output exciters. I have a old Bendix single output (1 igniter) that I got from Paul & a buddy made a little bracket for it you can see in my pics. I included a few pics here of my igniter exciter setup!
As for the starter/generator (that's how they were made if not just an alternator, which most were) they are more difficult to find! If you can find an old alternator from one of these -24s, you may be able to use the mounting flange & spline drive shaft in adapting a 24 V 'big diesel' (ie. bulldozer, pit truck, etc.) starter to the J44. Some welding & creatives skills would be required but it's a thought. Direction of rotation is important! The air start engines always had just the 115/230 VAC, 400 Hz. alternators, which weigh less but produce electrical power to operate the target drone, including the ignition exciter, which was a 115 VAC input type. You could possibly air start your engine using a set of several fireman's or diver's compressed air tanks and a valve to actuate it. I am not sure of how much air is needed to start a J44 but the manual indicates about 2500 PSI pressure is required. My starter/generator is no longer a generator because someone in the past had cut out the windings for some reason! It is now only a 28 VDC motor but that's fine for this application. I don't know the part number but I will try to take a pic of the data plate. I do know it was manufactured by "The Breeze Corporation", & that manufacturer is listed with others in my service manual! Later models may more likely have DC starter/generators, like the -20/20B & the -3, which is the 'flight rated' J44. I think all of the -24 s just have an alternator.

Hi Jason, if you have a starter core, you can have it 'rebuilt' by a competent automotive electrical shop that provides this service. You may also try to find an electric motor shop that would be willing to take on the job. A motor is a motor, so it really doesn't matter what it goes on. I was fortunate to know someone who is proficient with all types of electric motors and he rebuilt mine for about $150, including bearings.

Darren, my starter is toast it is a jayco unit that I picked up for $150. The bearings and internals are froze up I took it some friends that own a shop and were trying to disassemble it and cracked and twisted the housing. So I need to find another starter, I did pick up an air-start unit on a parts engine.when and if I can find another turbine disk and ngv I may see if I can get those ceramic coated.
