That is quite sad. Everyone was clapping and cheering. They didn't know it doesn't flame when started right. James

And that is why most people really shouldn't screw around with turbomachinery... Ignorance breeds injury...

But did it even start? To me it sounded like they just kept her on the starter for a while and then shut her down, cannot have hurt the turbine that bad? The old Whittle-derivatives usually flamed a lot during starting and the turbine material has improved much since then. Nevertheless they were a bunch of idiots who couldn´t have known a bit about turbine engines, the teacher must be equally stupid to even allow such a project without the knowledge or starting equipment needed.

That is quite sad. Everyone was clapping and cheering. They didn't know it doesn't flame when started right. James Well, the last sentence is actually not 100% accurate, at least for that engine. The RU19A-300 (the model I suppose this is, salvaged from an Antonov-24 or 26), has got a "spill fluid reservoir" that is emptied via an ejector into the jet nozzle. Depending on how full the reservoir is prior to start, the engine may produce quite an impressive firework which is completely normal. Yet, it shouldn't take as long as in the clip. The "experts" trying to run the engine can call themselves lucky that they weren't able to reach self-sustain and accelerate it further. If they fail to operate the fourth stage compressor bleed valve at the right speed (around 63%), the consequences are even more spectacular. And I doubt that they took provisions for that...
