I put this in a Viper post, maybe this is a better place... I have had a serious but silly relationship with the DHS and FBI for over 10 years over one of these. They detected it and came in with a team of people. The story is too long. If you need a gearbox, casings, etc PM and take it all just get it out of here. If you had an alpha detector it would look like the Sun is rising in the corner of your shop. I've had multiple warnings from them "do not reprocess the thorium" The offer I had to remove it was someone that wanted to do that. No. Officals suggested bury it in the desert but they obviously have never tried to dig a hole in the desert. Everyone I know with a boat wont touch it. If I can see you own a Viper or something like that grab it. It has been reduced to components and no hot section. Gearbox looks ok, fittings, etc. Take it all. Los Angeles. Trying to post a pic hang on.

Yeah, suggestions getting rid of it though? Responsibly.

I don't see what the issue is as to why men in suits turned up, something doesn't seem right as there's no way they could detect the tiniest bit of radiation and then show up at you house for a slightly radioactive bit of a jet engine unless you're already on a watch list but they would have just confiscated it instead of telling you to get rid of it.

photos.app.goo.gl/wTp59EPbd6w36Coy5This is Joji who works for the DHS under the Los Angeles radiological hazards dept. Shes very nice and has a great sense of humor. This however being the first time I met her was unnerving to say the least. Shes on the phone with the boss looking around the shop saying "I could be here all day". Ugh. They have actually turned out to be really helpful. The SW division director of the DHS came in here for an artwalk. Police, etc. Carry small pager sized devices that detect A B G radiation in the most primitive way as just an alarm. If a box truck or what have you passes by they can flag it. The gentleman came inside, looked quite alarmed as it was a public event and his thing was ringing. Had a quick chat with us and sent a team. They were very helpful and said if there is an engine component or a lodged piece of foreign material they would take the Viper and take it apart, remove it, and give it back to us. Before they could get here I looked up this thing and realized it's the whole thing. It's too much material for them to handle. They have been nothing but helpful and I call them from time to time to see of there is a program to get this out of here. It's not hazardous enough as is to warrant a special procdure, but lets say there wad a fire it would turn into a major incident. I would just like it gone and if someone could use the parts that would be fine. In it's current state it isn't that bad but there are spurious G B emissions.

This is not slightly radioactive. The Alpha emissions off it are huge. The ones i have seen on display have some kind of paint, lead or whatever. A spray of water dampens it down, or even just wrapping it in paper. This has not so much paint on it. And it is in my house.
I did read the other post but this is not a welding rod. It is at least 10% Thorium. It screams Alpha from Alpha distance. We have a detector that can detect B and G and it's throwing that off as well, not too much but it is there. Steve
