Well,i bought in autumn of 2019,it had 30 hours on the counter, looking very Nice and clean, i took a boroscope and looked inside what i could see and turbine wheel looking very Nice as did the stator vanes,as i am in Sweden i had to take the Word that it was a Good engine, Harry thompson gave me that price with starter motor and shipping to Sweden. Now recently i discovered some issues with it which i must adress and investigate before start attempt of that engine. ,yes that is sad ofcourse and not expected. Yes the gearbox is a separate thing, which you have to source, then you would need the drive shaft between gearbox and the RB199 engine AND in your case you need the SPSCU also which control the APU and the gearbox...I would NOT say it is impossible your project but it is Difficult. Also im wondering how it would work Generally, gearbox might be damaged due to the fact that in the aircraft it was a second gearbox driven as well, dont know if gearbox can be damaged of such sideloading or uneven loading? That is my thoughts!, maybe Richard staveley now more of this?? Good luck with your project!! /Stephan Höglund Yes,i payed 4350 gbp for mine, that was in autumn of 2019,the gearbox was much cheaper! Wait, they're sold separately?!
Did you check the combustion chamber, the turbines and nozzle vanes? Is the engine still in working condition?

What issue did you find? i don't plan on running it by the book, it's unlikely that i'll be able to source all the parts. I plan on going down to bare metal, make my own fuel/oil system also the ECU, as for the BMW t314, its used to start both engines and run the hydraulics when the engines are off, so i think 140hp to start a single engine alone is over kill in this case. I think the engine can be started with a much smaller APU
Keep us updated about your project, do you have a youtube channel?

The issue i found was that when i turn the rotating assembly i could hear a slight scraping noice, i dont know Exactly from where,it is that i have to find out,the engine has Only 30 hours on the counter so it should not have ANY issues! Yes i am on Youtube, search för T312 APU, checking radioactivity, yes this engine IS radioactive, its bearing housings are made of a alloy called mag-thor that is a mix of magnesium and thorium to get better heat properties, thorium is radioactive!

Well damn! Does that mean you need a protective suite to work on it?

No it is not THAT dangerous but ofcourse you should know about and Think about it when you work on it,how you do it etc,You should not have it in apartment or house for instance, when i measured my engine it was 5 milliroentgen of radiation, background radiation is much less so you should know about it when you work on it as i Said!

Is there a list of engines affected by this radiation problem? Is the RR Viper affected?

Don't think so, different manufacturer and that engine is commonly used in public for jet trucks/boats. jetandturbineowners.proboards.com/thread/1427/viper
