Hi
Pardon me as a newbie if I'm going over old ground with this thread.
Team AirAsia STAY GOLD has a problem with its Viper 520 and 535 motors which is jeopardising its UK land speed record challenge.
Does anyone have experience of rebuilding either of these engines? Or the special tools that are required?
The 520 has a damaged rear bearing; the 535 a leaking front oil seal.
All ideas gratefully received and appreciated! I'm quite happy for anyone to reply off-forum, if that's allowed/okay.
Thanks

Do you have any newer video's of the car? Looking at the ones on you-tube, the A/B is not getting enough fuel and the starting sequence was really slow. The 100>600 series are terribly sensitive to hang starts. They WILL eat a hot section in a few seconds. (Having first hand knowledge).
These engines are very simple and tough if you live by their rules. The rear bearing is one the easiest repairs, getting the Hot section apart is another. To get the rear turbine bolt out takes a 1" impact Wrench with a BIG compressor, Do not even try with anything smaller. With the bolt removed the turbine wheel will slide off. It is quite heavy so hold on. Remove the outer housing.

Hi Ernie
Thank you for your positive comments. Most helpful, and I'll pass them on to our engine guys.
You're spot-on about the reheat, which is the one thing we've sorted since we first (last) ran last August. Haven't run since, so no fresh videos, I'm afraid. The intervening months have been hampered by the engine problems we're looking to solve.
Andy An interestingly phrased comment, which I'll take as positive though it might not sound like it. I came here because JATO was well recommended, not because Team AirAsia STAY GOLD has been rejected by anyone. I want to break the UK land speed record. Period. So we are prepared to explore any avenue to help us overcome our problems to achieve that goal.
Best regards

Hi Andy
I think we have admitted defeat with the 601s, as neither is suitable for what we need and would need a lot of work to get them into suitable condition. That's been hugely disappointing and has cost us a LOT of time. It would be good to get the 520 running again as a back-up with a new rear bearing, and we are working through the current shortcomings of the 535 and will take a decision shortly on the best way forward. The main problem with that is the apparent oil leak from the labyrinth front seal, which is not yet something that we fully understand. Most people we've talked to haven't experienced it, but another jetcar crew here has with its 601.
Andrew (Hurdle) and Kieran (Westman) have been in touch with a lot of people over here, as have I, in the past week, but it nerver hurts to broaden the scope of investigation. I've already found out more from JATO and Ernie about the rear bearing in the last hour than I have in the last 11 months...
Thanks,

Hi staygold, and welcome to JATO. If you're going to try to beat the UK landspeed record, it looks like you've got quite a bit of work cut out for you. I spend a lot of time with Ernie, but unfortunately I have little experience with the inner workings of the rr viper engines. I wish you the best of luck in getting those things fixed and I look forward to some videos of them up and running!

Hi Richard
Thank you for your comments. Yep, it'll be very tough breaking Colin Fallows' record (301.670 mph) but we're going to give it our best shot. Fortunately between us as at Team AirAsia STAY GOLD we've had experience of several land speed record attempts, a quarter century of F1 and some drag racing so we understand that these things are far from easy or straightforward, and doubtless we'll draw heavily on our collective experience in time of need! From our test run last August we know we have a sweet car, though, so let's see how things go with a strong motor when we sort one.
And thank you, too, Ernie, for the youtube references. Interesting!
All the best,
