Nice build, dare I guess that your son got some inspiration from Rc Don? Looks very similar to his style of build. Got any video of it running? Guessing the value of a unique piece like this is almost impossible, if you find the right guy your son might get back what he has put into the project but hoping to make a profit? I am pessimistic unfortunately. A rich guy could just as easy buy an Allison 250. Cheers! /Anders

a school would spend about 5 or 10 grand building this.

Actually he didn't spend a lot of his money on the build, he spent mine! No actually he got a steal on the Cussons system where a lot of the high dollar flow meters and such were obtained. I sold off pieces of the build he didn't need and actually paid for a great deal of the project that way. He burned up a couple of cheap ebay turbo's in the process of "learning". That was a real tough time to encourage him to continue with the build! Anyway he got some help with used parts and some folks helping him out with reduced cost parts. It was all for his junior and senior high school science fair projects. Can't complain since it got him into a great engineering school. I had video of this up on you-tube a while back but in the process of upgrading an account it was deleted accidentally.
Yes the inspiration was RC Don and the first gas producer section copied a lot from that design. He built the Arduino based tachometer and it used optical fiber pickup's off the shafts. It works really well and the cone heaters turn bright red when this thing is really rolling. He did the analysis of the performance section by section and if I recall the overall efficiency was only about 6.5%. WIth such low pressure ratio's it's not all that surprising.
Anyway thanks for the feedback. I think I can use some of this to assign a value to it.

Is he short on cash or why would he want to sell the engine? I say put it in storage and take it out 40 years from now to impress the grandchildren, I think he will regret selling it unless he get a really good offer.

I sold my Cussons educational rig on ebay Au a few months ago for $650 Aud. I would estimate that to take the cussons bits and put them in the condensed version of the rig with some extra electronics instead of the pyrometers would be around 80 hours of labour @45 per hour and $400 for parts. Cussons rigs were $80K in the 70's but now they are old and riddled with asbestos gaskets, linings, wrap etc.
Conservatively I would say it's worth $4K to $5K but in reality it is only worth as much as a lazy man is willing to pay in order to get one that is built as opposed to building one to save money. On ebay I would not expect it to go higher than $1500.
You can see mine by searching google "cussons jet turbine" and it's on youtube. It was my first run and I am no cinematographer.

I presume you are just wanting to use it as a write-off? I dont think you would have a hard time showing what the value of it is if comparing it to something like a used Cussons rig - perhaps more on the high end considering this unit isn't 40 years old.
