A reader of our blog emailed me and offered me to come over and pick some industrial sprockets that fits my gearbox from his pile of unassorted bits and pieces at work, I´ll pay him a visit in a couple of weeks after he gets back from vacation. Great news!

The interesting part is that I have never had any contact with him before, not the first time this happens so I guess some people like to help out. I´ve fitted the filler neck, fuel return and the breather to the lid, inside the tank I will fit an extra wall to stop the fuel from sloshing around (I know John, you told me before but I was stubborn... and the fuel pickup will be at the rear wall with a snout so the fuel will be taken 1/3 from the rear wall. This is because of the risk for a flameout if I brake the bike when the tank is close to empty, with the pickup closer to the centre of the tank the risk for this should be slightly less. Cheers! /Anders

Hi Anders
How could guys not want to help out and see this creation rolling down the road :-)
Heh heh ......baffles in the tank , what a good idea .............long shallow tanks can be problematic, can you fit a baffle around the pickup to prevent a "vortex" sucking air in a low tank level situation ??
Cheers John

That's my "problem" my "friends" hear I need something and they step right up! I hear my attempts to blow myself up are very amusing. They'll help me build all kinds of stuff but they never volunteer to drive....
I would eat dog shit if it got us closer to seeing Anders hauling ass on this thing!

Cheers John Hi John and Chris, Fitting some sort of baffle around the pickup is doable, you can see in the pics below how the pickup is made. The cross section of the tube is much larger than the actual fuel line so the question is if the flow at the end of the pickup will be large enough to start a vortex? I´ll make it my lifes main quest to figure out what way that Chris eating dog shit would help this project along, stay tuned! When my youngest girl had her lunch nap I got some minor stuff done on the fuel tank, first off I welded a length of aluminum tubing to an AN8 fitting and drilled a hole for it in the rear baffle. I also fitted a sight glass to have a clear view of the fuel consumption, I will fill the tank between each run but still it would be interesting to see how much is left after the initial warmup of the engine. I barely managed to make a template for the tank baffle before my daughter woke up, next time I will cut it out in aluminum and weld it in place. Cheers! /Anders

I´ve made the internal baffle today and cut the tube end at an angle so it sucks fuel from the bottom to avoid vortexes forming (I couldn´t figure out a practical way to build a "hat" for it), with the baffle in place I started welding the tank together except for the lid which will be fitted last. While waiting for the air cooled torch to cool down between the passes I fitted an old scrap chain to the sprockets to see how the clearance and alignment would be, just like I thought I will have to mill some material away from the rear gearbox mount to get enough clearance for the chain. Since the "real" front sprocket will be several tooths larger I will have to take a fair bit of the mount edge away, no problems since it is overly beefy as it is. Cheers! /Anders

on the fuel pick up.. We made the tube and machined several slots at 45 degrees facing down. It stopped vortexes and foaming. Plugged the open end.

on the fuel pick up.. We made the tube and machined several slots at 45 degrees facing down. It stopped vortexes and foaming. Plugged the open end. That was a clever way of doing it, I hope my angled end will work as well. If I get unexpected flameouts with fuel left in the tank I might have to redesign it though. Last saturday night I decided I needed some workshop time with a couple of beers after the family had gone to bed, so I headed out to the shed and continued working on the fuel tank. A welder needs quality music! The tank is cooling off after welding, the Argon bottle is almost empty so I need to get it filled before the next workshop pass. The tank lid in place and lids placed on the fuel return and breather connections. One of the rear tank mounts in place. The other of the two rear mounts, sturdy enough I believe. While waiting for the tank to cool down I made the last three braided fuel hoses for the bike. Here the tank is in place, it was almost 3 in the morning so making the front mounts had to wait for some other day. A snake nest of hoses everywhere on the bike, I will have to figure out some fancy aluminum clamps later to arramge them a bit. Cheers! /Anders

Hi John, Thanks, if someone told me a year ago that it would be this close to finished by now I would have laughed. Cheers! /Anders

Hi,
Its turned out very nice fuel tank. Rock/metal music is always good at workshop, keep up good work!

Hi, Its turned out very nice fuel tank. Rock/metal music is always good at workshop, keep up good work! Thanks Sven, I´ve been busy this week building a fibre optic network in a village but hopefully I will be back home by the end of next week so I can continue working on the bike.

Its looking great Anders! You're one crazy dude! I was wondering how you intended to adjust the chain tension?

I was thinking same thing as Richard, maybe some adjustabel/spring loaded chain guide for tensioning?
