Hi Guys time for an update Have finished off the first part of the Free power Here the inner cone fixed onto the star shaped holder here the finished item, welding not great but ran out of argon so had to do a mig job, because of the thickness of stainless used (0.5mm) welder had to be on the lowest setting. Here all nice back in the arse of FM-1 ,perfect fit the NGV is still removable and lock wire holes have been drilled on to the gearbox and fan holder next Cheers chris

Hi John (TV94 bits) Me as well! On a novelty's note: You do realize that in the whole world there is probably only about 4-6 of "us" that are actually building and running DIY gas turbines purely for fun at any given time? ;-) You just re-added one to that list. <grin> Cheers back at ya! -Ash Hi TURBO here i thought that there were much more of us arround .

Hi All time for a quick update
now have all of the components for the gearbox preliminary design in inventor is complete also, will get a ratio of about 6 to 1 (turbine blade/ output axle) will use a chain drive from the gearbox to the axle 1 to 1, this gives me the option of changing the ratio if needed
so will be milling the casting patterns next (from wood) and attempting to cast in alloy very soon question to those who have had things cast before, how much must be allowed for shrinkage of the alloy?
Also looking into using an arduino based control for the kart ,i know a few of you have tried has anyone ever got it to work? would like to hear from anyone who has tried
cheers Chris

Hi Chris
I generally make the patterns "imperial" for a "metric" casting , ie , 1 foot dia pattern for a 300 mm casting , 6"/150mm , 8"/200mm , seems to be about right .
I'll be looking forward tyo seeing what you make :-)
Cheers John

wow ,just looking through the old messages and see that it's been longer than a year since last posting progress on the build!! How time fly's anyway lots has happened on the build. It took quite a while to develop a good drawing in inventor and then to generate a good G-code to mill up some foam test gearboxes this really helps a lot when positioning things on the go kart, initial thoughts were to mill up a foam model, and cast it in alloy Spent lots of time with Cameron over the Australian summer trying to get the furnace just right, long story short decided to get a kiln One was donated by a friend, who had stored it outside for more than a year ,no cover ,which resulted in a complete rebuild of the electrics, this now works and testing is underway for the casting Just in-case the casting doesn't want to work I have also bought billet alloy for the gearbox, so spent the best part of last weekend getting my Bridgeport mill knockoff ready to start milling (getting the man flu doesn't help) postimg.org/image/shtvjo049/postimg.org/image/iyk6q7cm1/also have finished off the free power section (basically the input shaft to the gearbox) postimg.org/image/rafxrg9zt/postimg.org/image/ipmm09ztl/ postimg.org/image/8r1ndsqe1/ postimg.org/image/4x874n921/postimg.org/image/igtmo3cex/also some work was done on the output shaft postimg.org/image/6229a0vix/") postimg.org/image/htupykfix/instead of the chain went for the toothed belt design, this gives the flexibility to change the ratio if more speed is needed, me personally likes the acceleration more after seeing what had happened to Anders third stage wheel im glad I decided to use maximum wheel speed of 32K revs giving me about 200km/h (theoretically lol) so work on the gearbox should start very soon ,only the electrics /electronics to go then cheers Chris need to get a lesson on adding photos, there has got to be an easier way

Johansson, the email address you give for Olov came back invalid "olov.selander(a.t)hotmail.com". Is it correct?
Thanks, Ron

The parts are looking great! I am very glad to see the FM-1 coming to life again as a stronger and better engine (I fancy turboshaft engines as you might have noticed...) so I am following this with great interest! It is very easy to insert the pictures in the post, just click the "share" button in the upper left corner at the PostImage site and copy the direct link that ends with .jpg. When posting here you click the little button that looks like a painting and insert the link adress there. Voila!
