Hi Chris
LOL.............yep , it has a way of interrupting the "important" things in life .
I finally got back in my shed yesterday and machined up a new mounting flange for the 5" jetpipe on the 12/118, nice to get my hands greasy , its been a while , steady progress eventually gets there.
Cheers John

Hi Guys time for an update Have been on holidays for the last 3 weeks so it was time to catch up on some projects one of them being the free power gearbox, that is now almost complete just waiting on finding a local balancer before the final assembly postimg.cc/image/43oucgqw9/postimg.cc/image/xiuilgnq1/also I didn't go with the ardino as I got given a controller that is basically a mini plc with analog inputs of course this required to be learnt and programmed ,this is progressing well ,have now a manual mode ,a setup mode for calibrations and an auto mode (once all is sorted), it also logs whatever points you want at one second intervals (good for trouble shooing later on) so once the gearbox was done it was time to get FM on the frame and get it plumbed up here the engine and gearbox mock up and here with all of the plumbing (ready for a test) latest is that FM has run ,have video but it needs to be edited before i put it onto you-tube.(any ideas on free editing software?) everything seemed to work (except the data logging!) didn't really notice the temps and pressures as I was relying on the data-logger to do its work will continue to improve cheers chris

That spool sounds awesome!! Lovely gearbox, home made? Yep sure is initially tried to mill it from 2 pieces of alloy (by hand) but I didn't get close to something reasonable the I decided to cast it ,not realizing the larger part would need about 15 kg of molten alloy in one go so that got put aside also I went to market to see if I could get someone to CNC the 2 pieces ,quotes on the smaller part were $2500 + so far too expensive so decided to make it out of sheet alloy and lathed bushes that were welded and bolted together the outside is not a perfect oval shape but it doesn't matter ,all of the clearances are fine The gears are from an old c20 engine ,luckily I can use standard bearings (probably wont last very long though) that are rated to about 24K so like on Anders bike the bearings in his gearbox seem to able to cope with the short bursts
I have also added oil sprays to all of the bearings that will spin >15K because I could.
cheers Chris

Time for an update some 6 weeks ago was running FM-1 at max speeds in order to get some RPM / pressure readings and FM-1 suffered a bearing failure, lotsa noise and sparks comming out of the compressor so shut her down. First inspection showed little damage as compressor was still spinning (with very noisy turbine bearing) Like John said when he gave me FM-1 ,pull her apart and have a good look Time to have a look... nothing serious here bit of rubbing here leading edge is a bit thicker now but no real damage the expected turbine bearing failure Further not really much to fix....so what was the cause? looks like the oil supply to the turbine bearing was blocked, some foreign rubbish was blown out So all of the oils system has been cleaned and checked, found the oil amount to be on the low side so the oil nozzle has been 'reamed' out and also the compressor bearing now has its own oil feed ,this previously relied on the 'waste' oil coming from the turbine bearing to lubricate it as well Upon closer inspection the NGV's had had a very hard life (lots of R&D testing ..lol) So decided to replace these while the engine was apart some of the testing damage Also inspected the flame tube, noticed a few bent evaporator sticks (4) seems that the tubes were cracking John supplied some tubing and new evaporators were made and installed, thanks John So while getting everything ready for final install noticed that the Turbine has been rubbing as well 3 of the blades have lost about 1mm so it will need to be balanced again something I still have to get organized, a new compressor had already arrived also still need to check the oil flows to each bearing. After consulting with Cameron we decided to use ATF DX3 on the bearings as this came the closest to Turbine oil normally used on these bearings. Hoping once all is balanced and checked again to get her up and running again and start finalizing the gearbox, time for some runs.... cheers Chris
