and one more ;D Tested the preheat gas ignition and it didn't work ..................had the wires on the the wrong terminals at the ignitor , swapped them around, and she "popped" nicely Lube pump works , fuel pump and fuel control operational , preheat gas working .......................mmmmm , she's ready to fire up ..............better do the right thing and fit some TOT thermocouples first . The Vband clamp for the jetpipe to turbo attachment arrived this morning .................. the guy at the CAT distributor got it right , and it only cost $49 with delivery ..................bloody cheap , was expecting it to be >$100 being a genuine CAT part for their huge 3516B engines marine.cat.com/cat-3516BCheers John Attachments:

Hi Stehan
Shes looking rather pretty with her fresh paint job , almost seems a shame to dirty her by burning oil in her belly . .....................maybe next week .................LOL, no hurry :-)

Hi Richard
Just spent half a day machining down a large lump of hollow bar to make the jetpipe flange , probably another half day tomorrow to finish it off ........................I'm workin' as fast as I can to get some exciting video up, can't have guys getting bored ;-)
Cheers John

There is NO reason for a person sleeping more that 4 hours out of 72... Starting to sound like a slacker!!! We want NASTY pron of a hot and steamy turbine crying and screaming in the night. Hot lube everywhere, a empty beer can and a Smoking tailpipe... Johansson has some OLD porn books and sticky ice cream sticks if you need insperation, said he did not need them anymore since he moved them from under his mill for support! Damn, I got to take a cold shower now.... Ernie

Hi Guys
A bit of an update on progress , ..................... the jetpipe has been made ( less nozzle) , 3 straightening vanes mounting a central tube the same diameter as the 45 mm turb hub , a couple of thermocouples bosses and a coat of paint have finished it off .
Tried some rpm testing with the super leafblower and it get the rotor up to a good speed even with 70psi lube pressure .
Had some re occurring problem with the ignitor when I tried to get the preheat gas alight , I think the hi temp paint on the combustor is the problem as when I repositioned the ignitor "earth" cable to the plug body it fired off OK .
With the preheat gas heating the evaps I decided to feed in a bit of kero to see if she'd light off and there wasn't a problem , the leafblower was only idling over so not a huge amount of air being forced into the engine , but the engines rpm started climbing quickly before I shut things down and cooled off the engine after temps had gone up to ~700 deg C .
Might do a proper start tomorrow now that it looks like she'll have a good chance of firing up without too much trouble , will still need to adjust idling fuel flows and learn what this engine needs for a trouble free spoolup , but its looking positive :-)
Did notice that the vertical combustor tends to have an overheated head once the engine is switched off and hot air from the turb scroll rises thru the FT to the top of the combustor , this in turn heats the fuel manifold and boils out the remaining kero , making for a smelly and fumey post shutdown engine ..................will need to extend the cooldown period .
Cheers John

Hi Guys
Fired her up today , thankfully the fuel contol's idle setting wasn't too far off and she settled at a P2 of ~8psi after a less than ideal spoolup , lotsa flame out the rear end , and a couple of "stutters" along the way , that big heavy turbine wheel takes some accelerating.
I "took" lotsa video , well I thought I did until I tried downloading it and found nothing on the camera :-( ..................I only ever use it to film a first spoolup , so its been almost 10 months since I last filmed anything ................maybe next time :-)
Have removed the jetpipe and will fit the jetnozzle to it now that I know I can fire her up .....................she makes plenty of noise even without the nozzle and only 8psi P2 ..................looking forward to some higher power runs :-)
Cheers John

Hi John, at least the next video you won't have to edit as much. Good to here she fired up with out major problems :-)))

Hi Mark
It was a relief to hear it start to accelerate away once the kero ignited , I was a bit worried that I hadn't set the throttle idle stop high enough when it was taking so long to start producing some P2 , it would have been a bit of a juggling act to have held the blower tube in place whilst giving the throttle a bit of extra .....................at least next time thats one thing I won't need to worry about , I can just concentrate on opening up the fuel stop valve slowly to prevent those flames exiting the turb wheel as the rotor accelerates .
First spoolups are such a stressful time , I was left a mental wreck afterwards ..................the build has taken its toll on my health :-((
Cheers John

Hi Stephan
Not quite 5 months since I started building , though I did have parts of the outer combustor made , that probably saved a couple of weeks , ....................so lets round it off at 5 months, its been a steady build .
I'll get the jet nozzle on her and do some "dry" testing to set parameters then build the afterburner which might take a month or so to get sorted.
Cheers John
