Hi Guys A milestone reached , both sets of cases have had all their major machining finished ...............even the ball bearing recesses went well for a change , a set of cases weighs ~10 lbs . Time to start thinking about shaft construction . The latest plan is to mount up a freepower wheel/stage on my teststand , just a dummy pinion shaft without gear , replacing the pinion gear with a 24 inch arm to measure stall torque , which will be a reasonable guide to max horsepower potential , as well as allowing me to see if the 12/118 can operate with the C30 4th stage freepower wheel downstream ................I'd really like to see ~80 ft lbs of stall torque being measured , which would mean ~40 ft lbs at max rpm and a potential ~240 hp ..................LOL, dream on John Cheers John

Hi Guys A few more pics Output shaft is a bit longer than necessary , maybe it can be used for something else , or just cut off Fairly close fit of gear in case , just enough space left for a bit of heavy duty lube to wet the gears before a short duty cycle , a 10 second drag strip run will only see several thousand revolutions of the pinion gear. Weight for this part is 7.1 kgs - 15.6 lbs. Cheers John

Hi Guys Some work completed on the gearbox Breather/filler on top and plug on side for lube level , circlip holding gear in place is recessed so that circlip can't come off Shaft shortened and a 10 mm thread/bolt fitted to hold heavy duty washer in place that clamps everything together , 12 mm key/s on shaft 10 mm and 12mm threads fitted into casing for gearbox mounting Sprocket is 21 tooth for a 530 chain Cheers John

Hi Guys Some pics of "inside" ..............big bearings Main gear ~20 mm wide , pinion ~25 mm Bearings are 6007 for the "little" ones and 6010 for the main output shaft which use to be the input shaft . Tooth size looks like Module 1.5 , pinion ~41 mm , main gear ~116 mm Cheers John

Hi Guys
Pinion has 25 teeth the main gear 75 teeth , pinion can supposedly "absorb" 15 HP at , 540 tractor PTO rpm X 3 :1 ratio gives us 1620 rpm .
15 HP at 1620 rpm represents a torque of 48 ft lbs , assuming a stalled freepower with 48 ft lbs , then at max rpm torque would be say 24 ft lbs, if we used 25,000 rpm , then it should handle at least 100HP , m m m , that would be nice :-)
Cheers John

Hi Guys Now to decide what freepower to use , I've got a nice C20 second stage NGV and wheel combo that could be suitable , but I'd also like to try using a readily available radial inflow wheel like the ones we've been using in our larger builds , so that others could more easily source and replicate the build . Thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers John

yeah I think the ideal setup would be something using an easily available wheel that also happens to be sized correctly for a gas generator built with another easily obtainable set of wheels.
Probably easier said than done!

Hi John, Do you think that these type of gearboxes are underrated on there specs, as I have been using a twin pump drive one as a gear train on my current project and I have been subjecting it to 90hp 300nm @3000rpm with no trouble at all so far! Hi Richard I think they could be very much under rated , most things "agricultural" take a bit of a hiding , so a fair bit of inbuilt "safety factor" , otherwise why fit such massive bearings . 87HP and 310 ft lbs of torque , nice any details on what you're up to ?? Here a few more pics of todays experiments , The female splined pinion shaft , 14 tooth , has a coupling piece that normally fits onto the 1:8 taper on the hydraulic pump the gearbox is designed to accept , I thought I'd try and fit the coupling piece to my "slave" Garrett F Trim turb wheel , my God its been abused , hopefully for the last time Just a rudimentry shaft tunnel, and a bit of "tin work" , to have a reasonable kart freepower Cheers John
