Hello everyone I am new to JATO and excited to learn more.
I want to build a jet bike. Have been fascinated by all things turbojet related for years. Need to get a good idea on how to appropriately learn and approach building a jet engine powered motorcycle. I understand there is a thread likely on this forum somewhere that I donβt see am just having a hard time finding how to build a jet engine. Any tips would be very much appreciated. I want to build the turboshaft engine myself and also am curious as to how large of a turbo or how many turbos I would need to propel a 550lb motorcycle. Any in depth guide or books that I could read into to learn more about this stuff?
Thanks - Cole

Hey John, Thanks for your input, I was excited to see you acknowledged my thread knowing how much you have done for this community. Am currently scouring through these threads you shared with me and holy cow itβs very apparent I have a ton of reading to do!!πππ Once again thanks and I am sure I will have many questions to come - Cole

Hi Cole
We're here to answer whatever you ask :-)
The size turbo you use as the gas producer will depend on the horsepower you want to achieve , and is dependant a lot on the available freepower wheels , its a long process so be prepared .
Cheers John

Cheers John Hello John, I read through one of the threads on here that typically a turbo from a diesel truck can be a good option due to the exhaust portion of the turbo being so large compared to the turbos size, is that true? My apologies I have not quite caught up to everyone with the proper terms for these parts still learning the technical details. I want to build a turboshaft bike that I could do land speed runs on and like the idea of building a machine capable of cracking 200MPH. How large of a turbo would I need to build such a machine, and do you have any recommendations for a Turbo you think might fit the build? Thanks Jon - Cole

Hi Cole The build thread that Anders did of his land speed bike jetandturbineowners.proboards.com/thread/53/landspeed-bike-diy-gas-turbine used a 98 mm inducered compressor wheel and was able to go >190 MPH. Finding a suitable sized freepower turbine wheel and constructing the power turbine stage with its transmission is harder than organising the gas producer, the most suitable freepower wheel is the 4th stage wheel from the Allison- RR 250 C20 heli engine as time expired wheel come up for sale from time to time , its flow capacity is more than adequate for what we normally want , the C20 engine flows 3.6 lbs/sec whereas to do 200 mph you probably only need 2.5-2.75 lbs/sec . The Garrett TV94 comp Anders used was an "old design" , there are more modern ones available with higher flows at better efficiencies , but are generally in "automotive" rather than diesel turbos , so have "undersized" turbine stages which limit their suitability . My thoughts would be something like the engine Andy M made, jetandturbineowners.proboards.com/thread/1025/hx-102-255-money-pit , but using a Holset/Cummins HX82 turbo with an aftermarket 110 mm inducered comp , the HX 82 is common and relatively cheap and when combined with a KTS billet comp makes for a forminable combo that will flow ~3 lbs/sec . Whereabouts in the world are, you so I can better point you in the right direction ?? Cheers John

See your over in Australia, would love to come check out Australia someday!!! Great info, quick question what does the term freepower turbine mean. I understand the Turbine but dont know what everyone means when they say "FreePower" Thanks John - Cole

Hi Cole US , OK you'll have plenty of options :-) The "free" means its able to rotate independant of the gas producer , its possible to have the gas producer at full throttle with the freepower stationary , at which point the freepower will produce twice its full speed torque , this is the reason why we only need a single speed gear . Have a look here jetandturbineowners.proboards.com/thread/1260/turbine-torqueCheers John

Hello dontblowup, I live north of Pensacola. I bought my TV94 turbine wheel, compressor and bearing kit from "Turbo Diesel & Electric Systems" in Forest Park, but they have several locations in the Atlanta area. My Garrett part were in-stock, on the shelf. They are also a stocking distributor for BorgWarner and Holset/Cummins (the producer of the HX82 Turbo John mentioned above). Great prices, in stock and guaranteed OEM (no import crap). I have no connection to them except for being a repeat customer.
Good Luck Hurdman

Best Regards Cole

Hi Cole
You could make it yourself or do what Anders did in his Build Thread .
Cheers John
