Hello Everyone! I live here in the USA where at the moment there isn't any of the white stuff on the ground to melt with burned jet fuel. I am Patrick and have had the pleasure of reading and watching some very talented builds on here.
Well, after 10+ years of planning - and by planning I mean watching videos and reading well more than I comprehend - I am in the build stage.
I have read a lot on here especially jetandturbineowners.proboards.com/thread/680/diy-turbines intro guides. I do know I have some challenges ahead, but hoping I can work through them.
I wanted to share with you my components to get your feedback. The turbo I have that was given to me is an extremely large turbo. Its a TV8102 from a marine/industrial 6V92 Detroit. Here are some of the specs:
Turbo: TV8102
Turbine Wheel Ind. 111.4 mm, Exd. 97.1 mm, Trm 15.97, 11 Blades
Turbine Housing AR 1.23
Comp. Wheel Ind. 77.47 mm, Exd. 107.95 mm, Trm 10.59, 8+8 Blades, Flatback
While contemplating my combustion chamber, I determined I would need a 6" CC with an 8" housing. Trying to find any reasonable 8" stainless tubing is not easy. 6" wasn't easy, until I came across a used combustion chamber from a JT8D at a scrap metals place for $8.00!!
Afterburner is a must. Also, I want to set up some sort of data acquisition for temps, pressures and turbo RPM. I was thinking either eddy current sensor or laser sensor for that.
First time posting pics to a bulletin board in a LONG time, so hopefully this works.
Now for a few questions I have. What thickness does the outer container for the combustion chamber need to be? I want stainless steel for really no other reason than to show off. lol I believe the can will need to be ~18" or ~450mm
I have seen some CAD drawings from different people. I would like to be able to out something into CAD to get a rough idea for placement etc. Are there any good public resources where I could get some drawings from?
I read through these next articles and through my vast lack of engineering knowledge was able to understand some of the math behind these builds. What I found most interesting was the amount of detail they went through to build these and then document it. I had not seen these before, but if they've been posted here/discussed I apologize.
Washington State at St. Louis study
Very detailed mini Turbo jet build
Masters Thesis on Turbojet build
I have been following different builds for years, and figured it was time to just do it!
Any comments or suggestions are always welcomed!
Thank you,
Patrick
