Hi Fredrik
Just about ready to spoolup , been making an electric starter for her , got everything setup yesterday afternoon but couldn't get the starter controller to work , thankfully my mate who supplied me with the bits gave me some advice on how to swap leads around to get it working , so hopefully it'll be OK when I try it in a few minutes time .
Cheers John

Hi Fredrik
Yep, got her spinning on the starter , no oil pressure .......................will try full oil pressure testing tomorrow once I mount the battery a bit more securely ..............but looking promising :-)
Cheers John

Hi Fredrik Well it looks OK .................but it don't work just not enough torque at low rpm to get her spinning past 2,000 rpm even without oil pressure . Back to the thinking of something else . Cheers John Attachments:

just not enough torque at low rpm to get her spinning past 2,000 rpm even without oil pressure . You might try an outrunner instead of an inrunner, much more torque in those engines and practically the same size. Here is a pic of the one I will use as a starter: This one is rated at 0.8kW and 1460rpm/v so it should be able to spin the shaft. I hope so at least, time will tell... I keep hitting the update button on this page, really interested in hearing about a successful first start!

Hi Richard
Yep, it'll get completed , this is just a minor hiccup , nothing compared to the multiple bearing and rotor failures I had with my FM-1 engine , that was disheartening

Hi Anders
One of the problems with "fatter" motors is they take up a lot of the bellmouth inlet area unless mounted a fair way away from the rotor , the Mamba in its current position created a "throat" around it just on the same size as the comp inducer area .
Bit more research required :-)
Cheers John

have you considered air-starting your motor until you can get it running smoothly during its normal runtime? I know it probably wont be what your looking for in the long run, but it can be nice to get away from an annoyance for a while. Best of Luck, Richard

John,
Get a starter from an old Jap car, remove the gears and reverse the field if you need to. It should have enough power to spin the GT...
I made one for my first working GT with a bendrix type of connector to engage the drive bullet on the shaft. Worked like a charm. But a bit hard on the bettery *lol* I needed to have two of them, one for the engine and one for the starter...

I used a 24vdc starter off of a VW>>> Works great and gives you 2850 rpm @ 24vdc.
I got tired of guessing RPM on starters so I put a strobe tach on several. They all ranged from 2200 to 3000 rpms @ the output shaft.
Gear starters are a good bit slower, 850/1500.
VW starter, long extension and socket to fit the turbine nut and you are running. Put a spot wield on the socket/extension so the socket does not fall into the engine.
Great machine work....
Back to work on the Hearse.... Hope to fire it this week!!!!?

Hi Richard
I've certainly considered impingement , a bit of hard line to the NGV and a bottle of high pressure gas ...................I tried full oxy bottle pressure on my bikes TV84 , it worked a treat ..............will persevere with electrics for another week or until I get thoroughly fed up and fit the hard line :-)
Cheers John

Hi Fredrik
Went and got a geared starter this morning , looks like ~5:1 gearing inside , will be doing some rpm tests on the starter as soon as I can
Cheers John

Hi Guys A bit of an update ................. the Nippon Denso starter I purchased ( $AU 65) had a 4.44 :1 gear set inside , after "removing" the electric motor with the hacksaw and a bit of turning to "round" things up, along with a new mount and coupling piece I now have a starter with some grunt . With ~70psi of lube pressure, 5W-40 synthetic oil, and 15 deg C ambiant temps , the new starter will happily spin the 10/98 rotor to ~7,000 rpm in ~2-3 seconds , no load rpm for the starter is 20,000, just about perfect Cheers John Attachments:
