Indeed, I have started making the coupling shaft on my lunch break at work so next up is to cut the splines and the key slot for the starter shaft.
I have been reading the manual and there are several filters that "needs" cleaning out at certain intervals, but bitter experience from my job as a mechanic has taught me that taking a 40-ish year old engine apart without having a single replacement gasket is like begging for problems...
Do these engines generally need to be overhauled before starting them after years in storage, or is it just a matter of filling oil, bleeding the fuel lines and crank it up?

Hi Anders, I thought the same thing with my Nimbus engine and only started it for a few seconds before pulling it down. After going through the oil and fuel system it was really pretty good. There were not many gaskets just lots of "O" rings that where as hard as hell, so you may get some leaks when you start it. The fuel system had some residue in the filter that needed cleaning with Acetone but other than that all good. If your engine has been preserved with that spray on wax stuff (not sure of the technical name for it) it will wash off with kerosene but the first time you start it there will be HEAPS of smoke. I would say if the oil tank looks clean and ok I would not worry with that, I would pull off the fuel filter and have a look but if they look ok I would just run it. If you can get at some of the "Last Chance" filters may want to have a look but not necessary. Oh one other thing, before "topping up the oil" spin it over dry for a few seconds as over time oil tends to settle in the bottom of the engine and will be scavenged up into the tank when it starts. If you top it up "before" spinning over, when you start it there will be oil everywhere . Cheers Ian...

Good advice, I think I´ll touch as little as possible to avoid causing any leaks. Very useful to know about the dry spinup, I can live without spraying oil all over the workshop.

I´ve made the custom shaft that connects the starter to the engine, here I am cutting the splines. And here is the almost finished piece, I only have to fit a couple of locking bolts to secure it on the starter shaft. By the way, it isn´t blood in the pics but scribing fluid. Cheers! /Anders

Blood makes a very poor lubricant, I know, I've tried....

The ignitor that pitciblackscotland very kindly donated arrived today! As soon as the Speed Weekend spectacle is over I will focus on getting the Viper set up for a test start, I can´t wait to hear it spool up for the first time! Thanks again Mark, you are an angel! Cheers! /Anders

Hi Anders, Good to see it arrived in one piece, lets hope the bloody thing works. I got my fingers cross that it will work out for you. Glad to help out my friend.
Cheers, Mark.

Hi Mark, You don´t know how glad I am for this, if there is anything I ever can help you with just ask. I will try to source some ignitor cables for the Viper so I don´t have to come up with some dodgy fitting myself, a bit too much energy in the spark to toy around with. Cheers! /Anders

I have a question for you electronic guys about the ignitor box, it is designed for 115V AC 400Hz and without such a source I need to come up with something.
Can the ignitor be opened and modified somehow so I can run it on 24V DC?

Hi Anders, I just had a idea does the engine have any accessory drive ports? so you could hook up a AC generator. The JFS engine i had used a AC ignitor box and was powered by a small generator which was attach to the starter motor. Or maybe you could use a IC engine generator???
Cheers, Mark.

I don´t know, seems like a lot of work just to get a darn spark. I´ll ask the guy you told me about in the PM and hear what he suggests.

Can the ignitor be opened and modified somehow so I can run it on 24V DC? Hi Anders Have a closer look at these somewhat simplified diagrams. Maybe you should open up your igniter box and compare it to the pictures & maybe come up with an idea! Here is a D.C. powered one (with transistorized trigger unit) & a A.C. powered one. Here is another D.C. powered one but with a simple trembler mechanism (capacitor/relay coil) Here is the text aeromodelbasic.blogspot.com/2012/02/starting-and-ignition-ignition.htmlCheers Erik
