The build is looking fantastic. Glad that your print turned out so well. It is so educational to see each part of the design and construction. I am hoping to visit Sweden for speed weekend 2018, am super exited about seeing this machine run.

Hi Dan, Thanks a lot, there are so many untried things about this project so hoping to rush it together and find that everything works just fine is a long shot for sure. Hopefully this winters race will be educational without any major setbacks so we can finish the build and make the alterations needed, so the really interesting year will be the next one when the afterburner should be up and running and all of the fairings in place. Make sure to come over and say Hi to us at the race, never mind if we look busy since the normal Speed Weekend look is hollow eyed and harassed with a wrench in one hand and a beer in the other. Hi Anders, I took my ice yacht out today, since it was a "heat wave" of 18 degrees F. Not turbine powered like yours. You and Oslov would feel right at home here in Michigan,,,lol. Regards Jeff

I´d like that Jeff! Last weekend my brother and I moved the rear part of the chassis from Olovs workshop to mine, now I can start fitting the turbofan to the chassis and build the afterburner. A quick mockup to see where everything will go... It didn´t take long to confirm our suspicion that this will be the most awesome looking vehicle we have built so far, and the jet nozzle will be significantly larger when designed for wet thrust! A set of fan brackets were made this week. The lower pair of brackets fitted so now the fan is hanging freely in the chassis, next up is to fit the upper pair and start making the power turbine exhaust manifold. Cheers! /Anders

There is not much room for a fancy exhaust so I´ll just dump the exhaust into a square manifold pointing straight up, similar to what I did on the bike. I have cut out everything except the side panels so I plan to mock the exhaust manifold up this weekend. Cheers! /Anders

Yep , straight up sounds good , it'll hopefully create a "chimney" effect that'll effectively scavenge the heat out of the engine/s on shutdown, perhaps a curve on the leading wall of the outlet so that the slipstream will help "suckout" the gases when at speed
The air for the fan will need to come in from the sides .................at this early stage it might be worth having a think about provision of ram air in the future as development progresses , at 200+ kph any ram pressure will help offset the inlet losses from the difficult entry caused by the "buried" design, a couple of "ears" fitted to the side panel work should feed her nicely :-)

Hi John, The idea is that the air passing by the exhaust at speed will create an underpressure that sucks the exhausts out of the engine, but in one way or another it will leave the engine. We have planned for air scoops at the sides of the fairings that feeds air into the fan, I don´t think that the air trapped inside the fairings will be anywhere enough when the fan is running at 30+k rpm. Unofficially we have thrown in the towel for this years race, there is simply no way we can complete the build in time without cutting every corner there is and that wouldn´t be any fun at all. We will keep up the pace so the ice yacht will have all of the major parts in place and show it at the race as a teaser for next year. This morning I fitted the upper pair of the fan mounts, after some grinding and smoothing out the mounts will look pretty good I think. After that I started making the exhaust duct, it is something of a compromise to make the duct as large as possible while still being able to be removed with the rear gas producer in place. Nice solid mounts.
LOL .....if you see the sidewalls of the fairing being sucked in , you need bigger "ears" ;-)
That looks more than enough exhaust area , you probably only need roughly twice the freepower wheels outlet annulus area , so something ~300 X 150 mm will suffice.
Are you able at some stage to fit a short diffusing duct just downstream of the turb wheel blades , leading into the main exhaust duct ,to maximise pressure drop across the wheel and horsepower produced ??
I think your opposition at Speed Weekend will be more than just "teased" by this build

Hi John, I just got back in from an early morning in the workshop, been working on the exhaust duct and now it sits in place. A 300x150mm exit was exactly what I had room for while still being able to remove the duct with fan and gas producers in place, great! I really need to get a sheet of stainless and roll up the afterburner duct, it will look really sweet. I don´t see any easy way of fitting a diffuser inside the exhaust duct that won´t restrict the exhaust more than it helps evacuate it. Cheers! /Anders

It would certainly have made things easier if we shat money and could spend all day in the workshop instead of just a spare hour here and there. Also it would be nice to have a full size race bus to haul all of our stuff to the races and live in once there, we don´t have a clue where we will sleep as Speed Weekend since we can´t haul both the trailer and a caravan at the same time... I bought a sheet of 1mm stainless today and my father happened to come over so he helped me to roll the afterburner duct. Since we won´t be running the ice yacht this year there is no reason to keep the jet nozzle sized for unaugmented thrust, so I opened it up to the "wet" diameter. I tack welded the afterburner together and put it in the chassis, it sure fills out the empty space nicely. The jet nozzle diameter looks absolutely insane, but since the air entering the AB will be cold and therefore get a temp increase of almost 1000°C the air will expand way more than what it would do in a "normal" afterburner where the incoming air already is 600-700°C. Olov has done an awesome job on the chassis, it is a very slim design so it should cut the air like a hot knife through butter! Finally a view from above, I had to stand on top of the chassis to take the pic so I was a bit worried that I´d tilt the whole thing over... Cheers! /Anders
