got it started again and when shutting it down thare was a loud BANG just before it stopped. Tried to start it again and NO oil pressure. I remember that when I first started it it had over 75psi and had that same bang on shutdown and oil pressure dropped to 25 max. Going to put it on hold for now. Am adding on to my shop. Will remove the gear train in the future and see what went wrong. Bill
PS Mark- got the manual. It is for a GTP70-60 very similar to mine. Different method of latching the start sequence. Let me know what I owe for the manual.

Has anyone determined the TRUE horsepower of the GTP70? The manual says 70HP (military rating).

I'm still waiting for someone to determined the TRUE horsepower of the GTP70 as well. There is no proof of it yet.

The manual is NAVAER 19-105B-501 Hi there, I've just got a GTP 70-6-2 I wondered if anyone has got a full manual together yet? I need to strip mine to find out why she is stuck. Noticed my oil filler has had a knock and broke the tank oil hose. Getting to just that part is looking awkward.

I too have just started getting into this hobby, and am learning all the fun unique workings and issues. I bought a GTP-70-6-2 on eBay from Arizona (I am in Michigan). Side note, there was another GTP-70 on eBay last week, with a gearbox and two generators.
But anyway, this turbine I do have will run. But it trips on what I am assuming is an overspeed. It seems to almost run away. No speed control via control air venting... Hard to tell with no tachometer. Does anyone know of a meter that works with the two-pole tach-generator in these?

Any recommendations as to EGT thermocouple positioning (clock position in the exhaust duct)?

Hi
I like mine on the side , 3 or 9 o'clock so that they don't get "cooked" as when at 12 , and are much easier to access than at 6
Cheers John

Does anyone know the part numbers for the igniters in these engines (and where to buy them)? I picked up another engine and its missing the igniters.

Does anyone have a gtp70 manual in digital firm ? I see one was post d here a while back, I’m hoping to get lucky and find a member here who downloaded that or has one. I have a Dropbox if you don’t want to post here, if that works. Thanks.

Cheers, Mark.

Let me know what I owe for the manual. I have a GTP70-6-2 that appears identical to yours. I'm slowly studying it, getting ready to fire it up.
The starter clutch is unusual in that the driven member has a centrifugal clutch, which engages only when the turbine speed is very low. If the starter motor happened to be spinning (at a much higher speed than the starter clutch), and the clutch engaged, it would be a pretty rough engagement. The small and fragile components of the starter and cooling air fan drive would be stressed a lot.
These are photos of the starter clutch driven member with starter removed from my GTP70-6-2.... Note how the turbine speed determines when the (heavier tail end of the pawl) collapses in under spring tension and engages the starter. If the starter is already spinning, there will be a lot of energy stored that will rapidly transfer to the clutch and gears in front of it.
BTW if one spins the GTP70 manually in the normal direction of rotation, a nasty clicking noise comes from this clutch as it skips over the driving member of the starter. I thought something might be wrong and took it apart only to find it a normal side effect of the design.

mark can you also send part# and photos of the Tachometer gauge? Thanks to all who are helping me along. My neighbor is in love with my GTP70-6, anyone have one for sale? Bill
I have a GTP70-6-2 that I will part with as soon as I have the pleasure of seeing it run. I'm slowly studying it and collecting documentation and goodies (like the test set). Have my heart set on an Allison 250 and a Capstone C30 or C65 so need to sell a few goodies to justify the expense lol.

I'm still waiting for someone to determined the TRUE horsepower of the GTP70 as well. There is no proof of it yet. First of all, which version of the GTP70? There appear to be two categories of GTP70, the single combustion chamber kind:
These appear to be the higher HP rating and less form-factor constrained designs. Note the variation in HP rating based on -number.
And there's the "highly form-factor constrained" version with two combustion chambers and very tightly packaged.
I'm going to guess that the rotating assembly is (nearly) identical in all of those. Two stage compressor and probably capable of 150hp+. So, whats the limiting factor in the lower HP designs? I'd like to learn more...
