Hi Ian Are they a single stage or two stage reduction ?? Does your setup need a particular rotation direction for the diff vs the freepower output ? I just found these which look interesting www.hubcityinc.com/SingleReductionParallelShaftDrives.html bit heavy in cast iron, but big HP capability :-) Shame they're in the US Cheers John Hi John, This one is a single-stage. As for rotation it gets complicated as I have finally decided that the turbine will be in the rear of the car with the gearbox hung off that and a short(ish) propshaft going back to a reversed axle. If the direction of rotation is wrong we just flip the axle. I think that should solve it. Cheers, Ian

Hi Ian
I've done a bit more digging around on those Italian gearboxes , nice units , but a shame the larger ones are in cast iron and getting a bit heavy, otherwise I'd be tempted to get one myself , I guess they need to be in iron because of the weight of a big electric motor hanging off it .
The smaller FA41 in alloy at only ~12 Kgs would make a nice medium sized engine gearbox for say 100 hp , if its capable of handling 4Kw at 1400 rpm , multiply by our turbine rpm of some 20 times faster ...............mmmmmm, maybe ;-)
Might need to do a bit more research on its "overload" capabilities for possible 150 hp use , gearboxes often have a bit of extra capacity even if its life is shortened , we only need tens of hours, not thousands.
Cheers John

Hi John,
I'll probably go for the next size up to give a little bit more margin. I've been looking at the stuff on jetpower.co.uk and am starting collecting the bits for testing the unit. Will take some pics when the gearbox is in.
Cheers,
Ian

Saturday I saddled up the horse (well Peugeot LWB Hi-Top) and went off to collect the Lenham GT bodywork for the SpridJET. I could have used my trailer but I nearly lost the the Land Rover Defender while trying to tow the horse box out of the field a week before. Very impressed with the Peugeot, cruises at 80mph (white van man) and did 30mpg. Brilliant! Rounded up the posse consisting of No. 1 Son and his mate Jake and 3 x MaccyD's breakfast and 130 miles later we arrived at Classic Cars of Kent. Very interesting place that prepares race cars for events like Goodwood Revival etc. Outside. Amazon and Lotus Cortina Piper GT Rover SD1 and Ford Falcon Sprite, Vitesse, Marcos and other stuff Smiley Lenham bodywork loaded Inside E=type, Mustang and others Two Lenhams, a TR and No. 1 Son not trying to drool Some old Beemer 141 miles later, another MaccyD (oh the heartburn) and the Lenham bodywork is back in the Volcano Lair Some speed stripping of the SpridJET shell ensued this weekend The shell will go for blasting, rust repairs and sizing up of the SCTA mandated roll cage in the next couple of weeks. While that's happening I can get on with reconditioning the suspension parts and changing the hubs from wire wheel to disc wheels. A bang box will arrive soonish and I'm getting the oil tank ordered (what capacity would you guys recommend?) along with the piping, temporary fuel tank and lift pump. Still need to find a suitable needle valve to restrict the fuel flow to keep the revs down manually.

For the life of me I can't find the turbine oil specification that I need for the Rover. I can get OX-27 and OX-38 off Ebay in the UK or Shell Turbo T46 or T68 from the Oilstore. Anybody like to recommend one please?

Do you have a manual that recommends the oil to use?
If you do and it is not available does it give a Milspec or Nato number that you can cross reference?
Cheers Ian...

Hi Ian,
I'm wading through loads of old manuals, with no success, and just trying to short circuit the process.
Cheers,
Ian

The SpridJET shell goes for a walk Shell, bodywork and turbine at my friend Pete's shop Cutting away the excess Nearly ready for blasting and welding Meanwhile with a little help from an ex-Boscombe Down fitter the volute comes off and I can see the output shaft I have to play with The ignitor from Andy Morris has arrived Next steps are a SCTA roll cage and trial fitting the fibreglass bodywork. Turbine final position has been decided, it's going in the engine bay. Rear or mid mounted have lots of advantages but just as many disadvantages and in the end as its my first turbine car using the KISS philosophy is a no-brainer. Need to have long discussions with the gearbox manufacturer (in Italian) so lets hope that Google Translate is better these days.

After a torrid few months of dealing with cancer** we've made a bit more progress. Stripped, blasted and protected the 'chassis'. Lots of welding needed but then it's an old MG Got the turbine ancillaries drive plate off, turned and re-drilled the standard air intake and bolted that down. Found some kit tacho and temperature readouts and will be ordering my FA54 gearbox hopefully before Christmas once I've stopped pestering Hydro-Mec with stupid questions. Everybody have a great Christmas. ** PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT : If you're over 45, male and have never had a PSA blood test then see your doctor ASAP. In the UK, about 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer at some point in their lives. Older men, men with a family history of prostate cancer and black men are more at risk. A friend of mine died of prostate cancer complications last year and that prompted me to get my 'junk' checked out only to find out I was in the early stages myself. Luckily it looks like it was caught early enough and has been dealt with.

Now for something more interesting and rewarding
